This year, the SDWLA Conference will focus on “Communities.” One of ACTFL’s goal areas for language teaching, “Communities” emphasizes the application of language learning “beyond the instructional setting.” It promotes teaching world languages as the ability to “communicate and interact with cultural competence in order to participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.”
As SDWLA members reconnect with the 2026 conference, it is fitting to reflect on the role world language instructors play in shaping communities in and out of the classroom.
We invite SDWLA members to reflect on the role of “Communities” in teaching world languages. We welcome individual and group presentations, papers and sessions that explore how the K-16 world language classroom addresses questions such as:
